How to choose a table or floor lamp

Because floor and table lamps don't require an electrician to install, it's easy to update the look and feel of your space with a simple addition or two, but how to choose? Consider your decor and pick a light that complements the colour of the room and the furnishings. Also consider what you'll use the light for - if it's for reading, you'll need a lamp that provide strong direct light. If it's for setting a mood, choose a shade that diffuses light instead.

Lamps for the bedroom

Bedside lamps are essential for creating a cozy space - pick a light that's soft enough to set the mood, but strong enough to provide light for reading. Choose two of the same lamp for a balanced look or mix and match for something more eclectic.

Lamps for the workspace

For the work space, you'll want a functional desk lamp with a bright bulb to keep you focused. Choose an adjustable arm so you can direct the light exactly where you need it.

Where to place your lamps

Unlike fixed fixtures, floor and table lamps are easy to move, so they're incredibly convenient and you can add them anywhere you need a little extra light. If the light is for reading, place it directly next to your armchair, couch or bed to give you ample light for the task at hand. If it's intended to provide soft ambient light to the entire room, place it in a corner, as the light will reflect off the walls and spread evenly throughout the room.
