Minimal yet striking, the Olo Floor Lamp by Robert Buhov captures the essence of quiet sophistication. Drawing inspiration from a single droplet of water resting delicately on a leaf, Olo distills nature’s grace into a refined, sculptural form. Three brushed-brass stems rise gracefully from the base, branching upward to cradle softly illuminated Yosh Glass shades. The result is an object that feels both still and alive — a study in restraint, balance, and timeless elegance.
A Design Born from Simplicity
Olo was conceived as part of the Swinburne University x About Space Lighting Design Collaboration, an initiative celebrating the next generation of Australian lighting designers. Each student was challenged to design a floor lamp that reflected About Space’s design philosophy — innovative, functional, and original — while showcasing their own creative voice.
For Robert, simplicity wasn’t just an aesthetic choice; it was a statement of intent. “I’ve always been captivated by how technology and design can work together to create form and function in perfect harmony,” he explains. “Olo draws from nature — specifically, a droplet of water on a leaf — but it’s not about replicating it literally. It’s about translating that purity and calm into a tangible, functional product.”
The result is a lamp that doesn’t demand attention, yet quietly transforms its surroundings. Its curved brass stems echo organic growth, while the spherical Yosh Glass shades glow with gentle luminosity. Together, they form a piece that celebrates both technical precision and natural beauty — a balance at the heart of good design.
The Designer Behind the Light
When asked what inspired him to study industrial design, Robert’s answer reveals a fascination with both creativity and technology. “I’ve always been captivated by the transformative potential of 3D printing, modelling, and CAD technology.
My passion for creating and design has driven me to explore various tools that help bring ideas to life. Studying industrial design felt like the right path to turn that passion into functional, beautiful products.”
This curiosity is evident in the meticulous craftsmanship behind Olo. Every element — from the branching structure to the fit of the glass — has been resolved through careful iteration and hands-on experimentation. For Robert, the prototyping phase is where design truly comes alive.
“My creative process involves plenty of iterations and experimentation. I find the magic happens during the prototyping stage — testing, refining, and adjusting materials and proportions in real time. Those moments of refinement are what elevate an idea into something truly finished.”
A Study in Longevity
Beyond aesthetics, Olo embodies Robert’s strong design ethos — one rooted in minimalism, longevity, and responsibility.
“My design ethos centres on minimalism and longevity. I believe in creating user-centred solutions with responsible material choices — designs that last, both functionally and emotionally. I prioritise durable materials that age gracefully, reducing waste and the need for replacement. Great design should simplify life without compromise.”
Olo exemplifies this philosophy through its in-built LED (3000K, CRI 90) and premium material selection. Brushed brass offers durability and warmth, while Yosh Glass — a recurring signature in About Space’s Originals range — brings a handcrafted element to the piece. Together, they create a sense of permanence: a lamp built not for seasons, but for decades.
The Art of Versatility
What makes Olo particularly compelling is its versatility. Its form allows it to stand confidently in both residential and commercial settings — from living rooms to hotel lobbies — while maintaining an intimate, personal quality. The design’s adaptability extends beyond aesthetics: each Yosh Glass shade is removable and interchangeable, allowing for subtle customisation to suit various spaces.
It’s this fusion of sculptural artistry and technical functionality that positions Olo as a hallmark of modern Australian design.
Lessons in Design Thinking
Throughout his studies, Robert discovered that design is as much about adaptability as it is about creativity.
“The biggest learning for me has been understanding the versatility required in this field. Each project demands a completely different skill set — from electronics and advanced materials to prototyping and manufacturing techniques. The more you know about different processes, the more successful and thoughtful your product becomes.”
This multidisciplinary mindset — balancing technology, craft, and human experience — defines not only Olo but also Robert’s emerging career. It’s a reminder that the best designers are those who never stop learning, evolving, and refining their understanding of the world around them.
Looking Ahead
Since graduating, Robert has continued to pursue his passion for functional, enduring design.
“I’m eager to explore furniture design — it aligns perfectly with my goal of creating functional, timeless pieces. I also want to keep learning — from new fabrication techniques to emerging technologies — to become a more versatile designer.”
His ambition mirrors the values that underpin About Space’s ongoing collaboration with Swinburne University: to nurture young talent, foster innovation, and celebrate Australian design excellence.
A Light That Lasts
Olo stands as a testament to clarity, craftsmanship, and calm. It reminds us that in an age of constant noise and visual overload, restraint can be the most powerful form of expression. With its poised geometry and luminous simplicity, Olo isn’t just a lamp — it’s a reflection of design done right: purposeful, poetic, and built to last.
In celebrating Robert Buhov’s vision, About Space continues its mission to champion originality and push the boundaries of lighting design — illuminating the next wave of Australian creativity, one design at a time.
